Daily schedule:
Wake up: 7:30ish; nurse
Nap: 10-11; nurse
Lunch: 12-1
Nap: 2:30-3:30; nurse
Dinner: 6pm; then playtime
Bedtime 7pm; nurse; wakeup to nurse at 4am-ish

The days when I work the whole day (Monday and Friday, usually) they skip both midday nursings (we haven't been offering bottles since I went back to work) but then nurse when I get home from work at 4 or 5 and then again at bedtime, so they only end up actually skipping one nursing.

Beck is now mostly refusing any food offered by spoon because HE CAN FEED HIMSELF. This has led to a burst of creativity as I try to prevent him from starving. In the last two days he has had: whole peas, orange slices, veggie burger fingers, toast fingers, cannellini beans, swiss cheese fingers, carrot slivers, and apple slices. He will also eat mushy type food from a spoon if it is the food he has already seen me eating, e.g. soup, lasagna. Theo is still happy with oatmeal, yogurt, veggie purees, etc. He'll also eat at least a half an orange if given the opportunity. Things are definitely evolving on the food front!

Other developments: Theo has been waving on and off for a week or so, but Beck just discovered waving in the last 24 hours and is loving it. He is also thrilled out of his mind about clapping. Theo has been clapping with one hand still and the other moving for about a week, but Beckett just started doing it today and he is going crazy with excitement about it. Both babies LOVE standing up and trying to pull themselves up to standing on chairs, their plastic jungle thingy, and the ottoman. Both can scoot backwards on their bellies but there is no indication of forward movement for the time being.

Nine Months Old!

eating and sleeping

So there's a fair amount of self-feeding going on in our house these days. Theo and Beckett eat 2-3 times a day, and usually one or two of those is self-fed. Plus for snacks they're eating Cheerios and these baby puff things that taste like peaches. They seem to enjoy the social aspects of eating, and they relish having control over what and when food is put in their mouths. Favorite lunches when Mama Lovebo is around to supervise self-feeding include toast fingers, orange wedges, and cheese sticks. Dinner is usually cereal, plus a pureed fruit or veggie, plus yogurt. Theo cannot get enough yogurt and oranges, but Beck usually prefers the carbs.

Since our last pediatrician visit in December the boys have been sleeping really well. They go to bed between 6:30-7:30, depending on how tired they are, and they sleep through til between 7 and 8am. They wake up around 3:30-4:30 to nurse, and then after I have fed them both (usually tandem, because they wake each other up and are then ravenous) I put them back in their cribs wide awake and they fall asleep. At night they nurse to sleep about a third of the time, though I usually end up waking them up by jostling them into their cribs. They are great about putting themselves to sleep.

The other morning I came in to grab Beckett before he woke Theo up, and I found Theo sleeping like this. When I laid him down, he was perpendicular to how he ended up here. His head was banging against the mirror in his crib, and his feet were practically through the rails. He was still asleep. Both boys love to put their blankets over their heads when they sleep-luckily they are crocheted and they can breathe through them. Note the fingers through the crochet holes--this is how they both sleep!

I'm reading a thought-provoking article about parenting, a kind of response to helicopter parenting. I like the idea of not trying to prevent all bad feelings and failures for our kids, but rather understanding that our kids need to experience those natural feelings, and helping them through it. I'm sure it's easier to write about it than to parent this way, but I find it intriguing.

Theo and Mark

This is Theo with Mindy's husband, Mark, who often comes over to spend time with the boys when he gets home from work as a teacher. As if their four beautiful, good-natured kids aren't proof enough, he is as awesome a dad as Mindy is a mom!

New play area

The bottom shelf of one of the kitchen cupboards (away from the sink, oven and stove, the most high-traffic areas) has become a dedicated baby play area. There's some plastic ware that I try not to use with food anymore, plus some boxed food items they can't really destroy.

Dinner Time Laughter

Dinner time with Beckett & Theo is an interesting time.  We continue to give them new foods to try, some of which they like right away, and others which take some getting used to (See prior post of Theo trying applesauce).  On the nights when they get tired early, our attempt to feed them is more difficult.  Last night we had two very cranky boys at the dinner table, who didn't want to eat.  But we persisted.  At one point, they both seemed somewhat delirious as they laughed hysterically at just about everything we did.  Once they were in a better mood they got hungry again and ate quite a bit of food as we had to keep refilling their bowls.  Then, just as quickly, they got tired again and we started the bed time routine.  Below is a video from a few nights ago when Bryn had some fun with Theo after he finished eating.

Double baby carry!

On Friday I arrived home to two napping babies. I enjoyed some conversation with Mindy and her husband Mark and one of their sons, Jalen. They left and I fed the babies and I could tell, this was not going to be a good hour until Jeff got home. I wanted to take a walk but both Theo and Beckett were so cranky that I couldn't imagine which one I was going to put in the stroller, because they were both going to want to be carried. I visualized my two carriers, working together. And it worked great! We went for about a 45 minute walk around the neighborhood and arrived home right after Jeff, so he could help me detach them. They were happy and lively for another hour until bedtime. The walk mellowed them out as always! Hooray!

The Baby Bjorn (the front carrier, in this picture, with Theo in it) is getting a little uncomfortable to wear with a nearly-twenty-pound baby. I think we're going to have to buy another Ergo (like the one I have Beck in here) to be able to continue to each carry a baby, or, in my case, carry two at once.

This morning we participated in a free open house to check out the Syracuse branch of My Gym, which is kind of like a Chuck E. Cheese for little kids. There are mini balance beams, ball pits, slides, ladders, big bouncy balls, and lots of things to jump and climb on. They have classes for different age groups, even as young as our guys. The Multiple Moms Mingle group I belong to often has free playdates there but since I didn't really know what it was, I hadn't gone. I wasn't sure I could entertain the boys there by myself (the free playdates have always been on weekdays, when Jeff is working). We planned to arrive at 8am, when I had heard it began, but didn't end up getting there until 8:45. Good thing--the place didn't open til 9am. Oops. Anyway, the owner (Jeff) and teacher Lauren were nice enough to show us around and play with the boys until it got completely insane and filled up with tons of cute (and not-so-cute) little white kids and their parents. I remembered once I got there that I had gone to a My Gym once with Mike B and Collin a year or so ago when I was visiting them in Oak Park IL. It looks exactly the same as there. I think it will be more fun in a year or two when they are able to enjoy more of the stuff there, but Theo and Beck had a good time in the ball pit and playing with some of the toys on the ground today.

We had a great visit with Grandma and Grandpa Leibowitz today, who got some pretty big smiles from the littlest people in our house. Theo also took three poops today to celebrate their visit.

Beck had a crap sleep day today because he slept on the way back from My Gym and then wouldn't go back to sleep in his crib when we got home, then took only about a 30 minute nap in the afternoon. By 5:30 he was pretty ornery. We sat them down for dinner (sweet potatoes, blueberries and rice cereal) at 6pm as usual and Beck would have none of it. Grandpa Leibowitz finally got him to eat some cheese if he could feed himself, then sucked on a pretzel for a little while. Then we gave him some toast. His eyes got heavier and heavier and finally he just fell asleep in his highchair, still clutching his toast finger.

Theo and Beckett enjoyed their Valentines' Day cards from their honorary aunt Tricia!

Our babysitter extraordinaire Mindy snapped these fantastic pictures of the boys yesterday. What happy guys!

Cheese!

We continue to give Beckett and Theo new foods to try. As you will see in this movie, Swiss cheese sticks seem to be a hit.

Letters to my babies

Dear Beckett,

You are such a sweet, joyful baby. You drool like crazy and have for months, even though you are behind on the tooth-getting competition. You smile at anyone, everyone, everywhere. You smile the biggest, broadest smile and at the same time look away like it’s just more than you or anyone else can handle to be this happy. You have mastered your F and V sounds. You eat like a champ and you try everything at least once. Squash and oatmeal and rice cereal are your favorite foods. You have always been more distractible than your brother when you are nursing. I am more physical with you because you seem to like being physical--bouncing, jumping, standing, and wiggling. You are patient when your brother is cranking up and often enjoy just hanging out on your back, smiling at the sky. You crack me up when you straighten and lock your legs and arms and then ball your hands into fists and screw your face up and grunt. You don’t have a lot of interest in the storyline of any of our books but love to put the corners in your mouth and turn the book all around in your hands. When I can tell someone wants to hold a baby, I give you to them, because I know you will carefully look at them and then enjoy the view from their arms, unlike your brother, who will have an outright shit fit and whine and scream and demand to be picked up by Mama. You will gaze at the person holding you, sometimes quizzically, but you do not judge. I appreciate and admire that. You love getting dressed and undressed and are super-helpful getting your legs and arms through the shirts and pants. You had an adorable curly blonde mohawk for about a week before we figured out how to smoosh down your hair after your baths. Most people say you look like your Mama and Grandpa Stu. I suspect that one of the reasons you eat so well is that you want to please me and want to eat what I have prepared for you. You fall asleep in the car almost instantly, like your Mama. You have gotten the raw deal as far as our parenting mistakes, at least so far--you’re the one whose head got bonked on the door frame while I was carrying you, you’re the one whose fingers have been nipped (twice!) while I cut your fingernails, and you’re the one who’s gotten a diaper rash when your diaper hasn’t been changed quickly enough. You’re so resilient and good natured about all of it, though. At your first set of vaccinations you cried for about five seconds and then got over it. But sometimes when Daddy comes home from work and picks up Theo first, I watch you watch them and my heart breaks to see the look in your eyes, like you got passed over, but you’re trying to make it okay. You don’t want to make a big deal about it, but you noticed that Theo got picked up first, and you wish you were there with your Daddy. I love the way you greet every day and every new friend with joy and warmth and the expectation of wonderful things to come. If I had to choose one word to capture your essence at this moment in your development, it would be BOUNCE.

Love,

Your Mama

Dear Theo,

You have had a mischievous look about you since the moment you could have a look about you. You are so aware of your surroundings--who is doing what, where--and alert to the smallest perceived slight. When you smile, you look right at me like we are in on a secret together, and there’s no one but us. You hate feeling left alone, even if I am sitting down, touching you, while I am changing or attending to your brother. That’s why you often scream the instant I set you down in your crib for a nap, but stop by the time I pull my arms out of your crib. It’s like you have to show me that you hate being left alone even when you’re exhausted and want to sleep. I also admire that about you--that you know when you are tired, and don’t fight sleep. You pull up the blanket, turn your head toward the mirror in your crib, and close your eyes. You hate at least 50% of people, which I think is pretty fair. As much as I wish you would give everyone a fair shot, like your brother does, I also have to appreciate your discriminating tastes. It takes next to nothing to get you going--I reposition the spout of your sippy cup, pick up your brother, take a moment to unsnap my nursing bra--and you can scream like crazy, as if someone has just gouged out your eyes. You are quick to make a friend of other babies we know. When you saw Toby last weekend, you looked him right in the eyes and put your hand on his back to greet him. When you’re set down next to your brother, you frequently pat him on the shoulder or back while gabbing away at him. You have a huge variety of facial expressions. Among the funniest is your look when you are expecting one type of food (that you like) and are slipped a different (less favored) food on the spoon, instead. You take the spoonful, look up, and then look directly at the person who slipped you the less favored food. If you had a thought bubble, it would say, “You did this. I KNOW you did this. It is completely unacceptable. And I will remember it.” You love music and love to dance, which involves a lot of head shaking (ear from one shoulder to the other) and rocking back and forth on your hips. Some might call it gyrating or humping. While you were eating dinner tonight, I asked you if you wanted more. You shook your head no. Your expressions sometimes remind me so much of your Daddy that I feel as though I am looking into his face. If I had to choose one word to capture your essence at this moment in your development, it would be HUMP.

Love,

Your Mama.
