Selfie and Reed playtime

Reed, like his brothers before him, loves going to the Great Northern Mall to play at the food court toddler play space. Kids have to be under 42" to play in the foam, socks-only, padded area.

A week ago Sunday I took Theo and Beckett to the SU women's basketball game. We met up with friends Leah and Jon and their baby Rosalie, who Theo got to hold. We also met up with Mama Sara and Preston as well as friends Emily and Violet. The boys ate their way through Twizzlers and Airheads and loved cheering on all the SU baskets. Leah scored free sunglasses for them too as part of a promotion. It was a good introduction to the Dome!

Weekend wrapup

Saturday was Preston's birthday party at the Pompey fire department with Dan the Snake Man after haircuts in the morning. Theo and Beckett were riveted and touched every single animal they could. There was great cake and ice cream and a pinata and some of their friends from school. It was an excellent party, all around. On the way home we stopped at a great greenhouse and the boys had fun choosing out some plants to bring home. That evening we had some good friends over for dinner and the boys had a lot of fun with the other little kids.

Sunday I took the boys out for a walk in the woods near our house, behind the boys' old school. We suited up in our snow pants, winter coats, and boots. Theo insisted on bringing his backpack so he could bring a pen, a notebook, a magnifying glass, and books on bird and tree identification. As soon as we got to the fields behind the school, Beckett took off through the snow, running and jumping and rolling in the snow and making snowballs. Theo took his time through the snow, making lots of stops to put down his backpack, take out his notebook, and jot down notes about what he noticed or experienced. (We have been reading a lot of Magic Tree House and Theo wanted to emulate Jack, who jots down notes on his adventures.) Reed had a tough time walking through the crunchy six-inch-deep snow, so I wore him on my back for the walk through the open field. Once we got to the trail in the woods, there was a nice path packed down that everyone could walk on, and Reed was happier walking by himself. Beckett ran on ahead and looked like he was truly enjoying a huge wild space all to himself. We ended up at the playground deep in the park and the boys loved trying everything out in the snow and ice. Theo also did some amazing ninja warrior winter edition moves. I didn't get a lot of good photos of Beckett because he was so far ahead most of the time.

A week ago Thursday and Friday were freakishly warm and so the boys wanted to try out their new bikes at our favorite bike park, Santaro Park. Unfortunately the temperature went from 55 degrees when they got off the bus Friday to about 40 degrees when we got to the park, with a constant rain that put a real damper on the bike riding experience. We only stayed out for 10-15 minutes because everyone was very cold with the rain and the wind and the cold, but it was fun to try out the Christmas bikes even for a little bit. Jeff couldn't believe that I took them out but they wanted to try their new bikes so much, and I thought it was worth going even for a few minutes rather than saying no at the outset.

Then that same night and the next day we got probably eight to ten inches of snow. If it hadn't been so cold we probably would have gone sledding within the same 24 hours of bike riding!

kids doing weird stuff

Our boys have many similarities, including a love of transformers, matchbox cars, wrestling, and dessert. But they have many developing differences that seem to grow more pronounced as they get older. Here are just a few examples of weird stuff they're doing these days, or from time to time. I'll leave it to you to match the child with the behavior.

Last week I bought some new snowboots. I tried them on and walked upstairs with them on as the boys were getting ready to go to bed. As soon as I got to Theo's room, he dropped to the floor to examine the boots. "Oooooh! The laces! The hooks!" he said, as he ran his fingers over every square centimeter of the boots. He pressed down on the toe, felt the width of my toe box in the boot, and ran his hand up the back of my boot. "Fur on the top! That's so soft! Mama, I LOVE them!" I told him I was glad he liked them, but that I wasn't sure I was going to keep them. "Oh mama, you have to keep them! They're so great!"

A couple nights ago, after many nights of sleeping a little less than usual for a variety of reasons, Beckett was ratcheting up the crazy behavior at bedtime. He falls on the floor dramatically, sliding across the floor on his knees, and laughs maniacally. He simultaneously acts wide-awake and coherent, and at the same time is hitting himself in the head with the palms of both hands, seemingly to keep himself awake. He just has SO MUCH energy to burn off!

Beckett has also recently developed a stutter. He sometimes has a hard time getting his words out to us. His teacher says she has noticed it in a group setting when he is very attentive to what is going on and very enthusiastic about sharing his thoughts. I think that it is possible that it is a fleeting problem related to how much his vocabulary is growing, and rapidly. We're going to keep an eye on it for now.

Baby Reed has developed strong preferences for who is caring for him. When he was sick a few weeks ago he was waking up a lot at night and one time when Jeff went in, he screamed "No! I don't want you! I want mama! Get out of here!" Grandma Joanie has experienced the same thing, where Grandpa Stu is reading to Reed and Grandma Joanie comes in to hang out and Reed screams that he doesn't want her in there. It's pretty harsh and hard to hear but it's usually short-lived. It's just jarring to see our usually cheerful and easygoing little guy get so bent out of shape about his preferred caregiver.

Costumes

Last Saturday night Lauren and Jason braved the awful weather to trek over to our house for dinner. The boys were in fine form, trying out many of their costumes and kitchen equipment.
